How to Calculate Age from Date of Birth
The manual method is simple to state but fiddly in practice: subtract your birth year from the current year, then subtract 1 if your birthday has not yet occurred this year. That gives your age in full years. To go deeper, count the full months since your last birthday, then the remaining days.
For example, someone born on March 28, 1995, calculated on June 13, 2026, is 31 years old with a birthday already passed this year, plus 2 full months (March 28 to May 28) and 16 extra days (May 28 to June 13) — 31 years, 2 months, and 16 days. The tricky part is month-end edges: a birth date of January 31 must correctly count against February 28 (or 29 in a leap year). Our calculator handles these boundaries automatically.
The Formula Behind an Accurate Age Calculation
Exact age = current date minus birth date, expressed as complete calendar years, then whole remaining months, then remaining days. Counting it in days alone requires adding 365 days for each standard year plus 1 extra day for every leap year you have lived through (a leap year occurs every 4 years, except century years not divisible by 400 — so 2000 was a leap year but 1900 was not). Doing this across decades by hand is where most mistakes happen; an online age calculator like this one simply counts every calendar day, so the result is always exact.
