How to Compare Pizza Sizes — Complete Guide
Introduction
Have you ever stared at a pizzeria menu wondering if it's better to buy two 10-inch pizzas or one large 14-inch pizza? You aren't alone. Because pizzas are circular, their size increases exponentially with their diameter. A small increase in the diameter results in a massive increase in the total amount of pizza you get. The Pizza Size Calculator is designed to solve this common dilemma, helping you determine exactly which pizza offers the best value for your money. By comparing the area of two different pizzas alongside their prices, our tool instantly calculates the price per square inch, empowering you to make the smartest ordering decision every time.
Instructions
Using the Pizza Size Calculator is quick and simple. First, gather the diameter and the price for the two pizzas you want to compare. Enter the diameter (in inches) and the price of the first pizza into the "Pizza 1" fields. Then, input the diameter and price of the second pizza into the "Pizza 2" fields. Click the "Compare Pizzas" button.
The calculator will instantly compute the total surface area for both pizzas in square inches. It will then divide the price by the area to find the exact cost per square inch for each pizza. Finally, it will display a clear conclusion, telling you which pizza is the better deal and precisely by what percentage you are saving compared to the alternative. If you wish to make another comparison, simply hit the "Reset" button to clear the fields and start over.
The Formula
The mathematics behind comparing pizzas relies on the classic geometric formula for calculating the area of a circle. The total amount of pizza you receive is defined by its surface area, not just its diameter.
The formula for the area of a circle is:
Area = p — r—
Where p (Pi) is approximately 3.14159, and r is the radius of the pizza (which is half of the diameter).
For example, if you have a 10-inch pizza, the radius is 5 inches.
Area = 3.14159 — (5)— = 3.14159 — 25 = 78.54 square inches
If you have a 14-inch pizza, the radius is 7 inches.
Area = 3.14159 — (7)— = 3.14159 — 49 = 153.94 square inches
As you can see, a 14-inch pizza is almost exactly double the size of a 10-inch pizza, even though the diameter is only 4 inches larger!
Once the area is found, we calculate the value by finding the price per square inch:
Price per Square Inch = Price ÷ Area
If the 10-inch pizza costs $10.00, the price per square inch is $10.00 — 78.54 = $0.127.
If the 14-inch pizza costs $15.00, the price per square inch is $15.00 — 153.94 = $0.097.
The lower the price per square inch, the better the value. In this case, the 14-inch pizza provides significantly more pizza per dollar.
Use Cases
The pizza size formula has highly practical applications anytime you order food. Here are some of the most common scenarios:
- Choosing the Best Family Meal Size: When ordering for a group, you might debate between getting three medium pizzas or two extra-large pizzas. Calculating the total square inches helps you ensure everyone gets enough food while keeping costs down.
- Evaluating Menu Deals: Many pizzerias offer special bundles, like "Two Mediums for $14" or "One Large for $12". A quick check using our calculator reveals which special truly maximizes your pizza yield.
- Party Planning and Catering: If you are throwing a party, knowing the exact area of pizza you need per person helps avoid over-ordering or running out of food. Large pizzas are almost universally more cost-effective for crowds.
- Personal Value Optimization: Even when ordering for yourself, deciding between a personal pan pizza or a medium pizza with the intention of keeping leftovers can be heavily influenced by understanding the drastic difference in the price per square inch.
